SalazarViegas

Salazar Fremoso Viegas (14 January 1908 – 6 June 1991) was a Portuguese Army officer, colonial governor and Colonial War veteran. As a junior officer, Salazar Viegas participated in the attempted military coup which aimed at ousting the authoritarian Estado Novo regime in 1959. The operation was unsuccessful, and Viegas was subsequently arrested. After the Carnation Revolution in 1974, he became a prominent critic of the Estado Novo regime, and was elected to represent the Army in the Revolutionary Council. He was later appointed as the Governor-General of Portuguese Guinea, and served in this position until the independence of Guinea-Bissau in 1974.
