Indiana, a state with dual regional identities encompassing the Midwest and the Great Lakes region, holds the distinction of being the 17th most populous and the 38th largest state in the United States. Its name, derived from “Indian Land” and “Land of the Indians,” pays homage to the Native American communities that thrived on this land long before the arrival of European settlers.
Formerly known as the Indiana Territory, it achieved statehood on December 11, 1816, marking its place as the 19th state to join the Union. Anchoring this vibrant state is the bustling city of Indianapolis, boasting a population of over 800,000 residents, making it Indiana’s largest city. Additionally, Indiana boasts other significant urban centers, including Fort Wayne, Evansville, and South Bend, where the prestigious University of Notre Dame calls home. Indiana proudly bears the moniker “The Hoosier State,” a nickname shared with the spirited athletic teams of Indiana University.
